There is  a wonderful story in the Bible that is found in the book 2nd Chronicles, which is a historical book. In this story King Solomon builds a temple. He prays and dedicates the temple. In his prayer 

He asks God for very specific things with regard to the well being of the people of God,  and their relationship with God.And in response to this prayer  God appeared to Solomon at night with a response to his prayer. . Yes he heard Solomons prayer. And part of Gods response was the very well known scripture. Found in 2Chronicles 7:14 which reads as: 

14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land

This text certainly provides wise counsel for entering a new year.
