Welcome to Faith Talk! I’m Rev. Jay Stuart Glover, and as we step into this new year, I’d like to offer a reflection that challenges and inspires us to the appropriate faithful response. Let’s begin by considering two profound biblical passages:
Jeremiah 2:13:
"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water."
John 7:38:
"Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them."
These two passages speak to us through the metaphor of water, a symbol used throughout the Bible to convey deep spiritual truths. In examining these verses, we discover insights about the nature of God, the human condition, and the life-transforming power of the Holy Spirit.
As believers, we are called not only to receive this living water but to allow it to flow through us, transforming the world around us. Just as a river shapes the land it passes through, the living water within us should shape our relationships, our communities, and our world. The Holy Spirit, working in and through us, can make an impact—just like a river that carves its way through obstacles, finding its path to bring life and growth.
We are called to be distribution centers of God’s love, mercy, and justice. The rivers of living water within us should flow out, making a difference in the lives of those around us, just as a river changes the landscape through which it moves.
As we journey into this new year, let’s reflect on the state of our souls. Are we still seeking to fill ourselves with broken cisterns, or have we embraced the living water of Christ?
