When Jesus entered Capernaum,
a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying,
In this opening verse we see the socially, militarily powerful leader, a commander in the military, coming to Jesus with an appeal, with a cry for help.
"Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully."
This centurion had power in society, a military commander, a leader, a man with a certain level of authority in the military. He had power but he realized that with all the authority and power bestowed upon him by the government, he was powerless when it came to helping his paralyzed servant who was described as dreadfully suffering.
He appealed to Jesus who answered his appeal.
When life leads us to a place of spiritual paralysis that puts us on a trajectory towards despair, desperation and desolation, perhaps that is a good time to allow God to speak order into our chaos through his word. Perhaps this is a good time to spend meditating on a scriptural passage reading it slowly out loud, over and over again, as in Lectio divina, letting God speak into your life, into your circumstance, into your chaos.
